Kantor Center Issues May/June Newsletter on Anti-Semitism and Racism

Kantor Center News and Events

  • As part of the Wiener Lecture Series for the 2012-13 academic year, Natalia Skradol lectured, on 22 May,  on “Prohibited Areas and Areas of Prohibitions: The Rhetoric of Closed Areas“. On 19 June, the closing session of the Wiener Lecture Series was dedicated to a discussion of the influence of Raoul Hilberg’s The Destruction of the European Jews on the historiography of the Shoah.   • On 25 May Mark Weizman, head of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in New York, discussed with the Center’s staff the ban of circumcision and Kosher shechita in Europe.
  • On 27 May David Hirsh, a lecturer in Sociology at Goldsmiths College, University of London, and the founder of Engage, a campaign against academic boycotts of Israel, discussed with the Center’s staff the results of the Ronnie Fraser Trial in London and the debate on the Working Definition of Antisemitism.
  • On 28-30 May the Center’s staff participated in the 4th International Conference of the Global Forum for Combating Antisemitism, organized by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Center head Prof. Dina Porat and Adv. Talia Naamat co-chaired the Law, Legislation and Enforcement Group.
  • On 30 May the Center sent an abstract of the annual report on antisemitism and the Europe volume of Legislation for Equality to the Special Rapporteur of the Third Commission of the United Nations.
  • On 13 June, as part of the annual interdisciplinary seminar series on “Dilemmas of Identity: European Jews in the 21st Century – Extinct Identities, Formative Identities,” Prof. Michael Corinaldi lectured on “The Jewish Identity of Marrano and Other Hidden Jews.” The full program for the series, coordinated by Dr. Haim Fireberg, can be downloaded in Hebrew here.
  • On 17 June Prof. Dina Porat, the Center’s head, took part in a meeting of the Bavarian Memorial Committee for former concentration camps which took place in Munich, Germany.
  • In June, the second volume of Legislating for Equality – A Multinational Collection of Non-Discrimination Norms, edited by Talia Naamat, Nina Osin and Dina Porat, was published by Brill. The volume is dedicated to the Americas,
