The Brandeis Center and Jewish on Campus (“JOC”) filed a Title VI complaint with the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights against Wellesley College (“Wellesley”) in November 2023, alleging that the administration failed to take appropriate action in response to anti-Semitic events. As alleged in the complaint, Jewish students at Wellesley were targeted by residential staff, including RAs, who emailed dorm residents stating, “there should be no space, no consideration, and no support for Zionism within the Wellesley College community.” By failing to act, Wellesley permitted a hostile environment to grow, effectively condoning conduct that marginalizes and excludes Jewish students for whom Zionism is integral to their Jewish identity.
