Legal Claims Against

Jerusalem Coffee House

Jonathan Hirsch has filed a lawsuit against an Oakland café owner, Abdulrahim Harara, and the East Bay Community Space, alleging religious discrimination. The lawsuit claims Hirsch was forcibly removed from Jerusalem Coffee House for wearing a hat with a Jewish Star. Harara allegedly demanded to know if Hirsch was a “Zionist,” physically pushed him toward the exit, and used anti-Israel and anti-Semitic slurs. An employee of the East Bay Community Space supported Harara’s actions, arguing that Hirsch had put himself in the situation. The lawsuit, filed under California’s Unruh Civil Rights Act, asserts that Hirsch’s rights were violated. Hirsch seeks compensatory and punitive damages, as well as injunctive and declaratory relief.
