This video captures her explanation why Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is one of the most powerful tools to protect Jewish students on college campuses from anti-Semitic harassment and discrimination. To combat anti-Semitic harassment and discrimination on campus, college administrators must first be able to recognize it. For that to happen, students must be able to articulate what is happening to them on campus as such — rather than a political debate. Speakers discussed the consensus surrounding the exclusive adoption of the IHRA working definition of antisemitism and the rejection of all watered-down substitutes. The IHRA working definition provides examples of how anti-Zionism is used as a cover for anti-Semitism, including holding Jews collectively responsible for actions of the state of Israel or drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis. Representing their respective major Jewish organizations, speakers also provided Capitol Hill staffers with examples of anti-Semitic incidents occurring across the country, with most being reported by Jewish university students. Kenneth Marcus, Founder and Chairman of the Brandeis Center, is at the forefront of many of these legal cases. AJU President Jeffrey Herbst will join Marcus in a conversation exploring the utility of Title VI and other laws in combating antisemitism on campuses, the tension between free expression and safety, and how Jewish students and their families should approach these challenges. In the past year, antisemitic incidents have spiked by more than 400%, a level that FBI director Christopher Wray calls “historic.” This panel discusses how we have reached this point as a nation, how to recognize antisemitism when we see it, and how to combat it. The program discusses ways to empower individuals and communities that experience or observe antisemitism to oppose it, including through education, allyship, legislation, and litigation. Importantly, there is a discussion as to how to combat antisemitism in a fashion consistent with the protections afforded other groups, and respecting the protections afforded by the first amendment. Attendees are encouraged to visit the Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice's "21-Day Practice on Combating Antisemitism," (https://www.americanbar.org/groups/crsj/projects-and-initiatives/21-day-practice-on-combating-antisemitism/) which includes accessible sources and resources that provide a broad understanding of many facets of antisemitism. The aggressive and violent encounters by Jewish students and faculty members on campuses across the country, most of which have been met with apathy, willful blindness, and callous indignation on the part of administrators who hide behind claims that free speech protects hate speech when directed at Jews (while ignoring that every other “marginalized” group of students must be protected in safe spaces and the like), have led to Jewish members of these campus communities feeling frightened, ostracized, and alone. The pathetic and embarrassing Congressional testimony of the presidents of MIT, UPenn, and Harvard only represent the tip of the iceberg but is there hope that perhaps the breaking of the dam will lead to significant and long overdue changes? Will pushback against Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion bureaucracies – now endemic across America’s universities (and K-12 programs) – continue, and will the national attention to what it has wrought for Jews on campus lead to a safer and more welcoming environment for them? Or will it require legal action from both individual civil lawsuits and federal investigations to finally effectuate the necessary changes that will lead to Jews being treated with the same respect, dignity, and security that is afforded every other student group? Please join us for an enlightening and informative conversation with Ken Marcus and Asaf Romirowsky to learn more about what’s happening to address antisemitism in the academy. 16 2 YouTube Video UExTdnZKckZsLTlkem40SWhKNmZwTHQ0M2NKa3UtVUNoRS45NzUwQkI1M0UxNThBMkU0 Antisemitism in Academia January 10, 2024 1:48 pm Join the School of Public Policy for a thought-provoking webinar that explores Antisemitism and Speech on American higher education institutions. The Hamas massacre of Israeli civilians on October 7th will be remembered not only as a watershed moment in world history, but also in the history of American higher education. Like no other sector of American civil society, academia has shown itself to be both ideologically rigid and, in many instances, antisemitic. In this webinar, experts in religious liberty, antisemitism, law and public policy, join to discuss the events of this last month, and what it may portend for the future. Marcus emphasizes the need for comprehensive solutions and the role of universities in fostering inclusive environments. Marcus’s insights on the importance of exclusively using the IHRA Definition to define anti-Semitism. Host John Podhoretz mentioned that any enshrined definition of anti-Semitism allows anti-Semitic individuals to successfully discriminate against Jews by maneuvering around the definition. In response, guest Tevi Troy noted that: “From a philosophical perspective, that makes sense. But our friend Ken Marcus has written about this issue, and he’s worked at the [U.S.] Department of Education, and he says [that] without a definition, the bureaucrats at the Department of Education, the people that enforce the laws against discrimination, they cannot pursue cases of discrimination. They just let it lie there, because they say the don’t know how to address it. So if you want to have the federal government go after people who are anti-Semitic or have the federal government stop spending money on anti-Semitic programs, of if you want to have the federal government say that there are things that are forbidden, you need to have some kind of definition. And if you’re going to have definitions, I’d rather have the IHRA Definition…over this very mealy-mouthed, wishy-washy Nexus definition.” 0 0 YouTube Video UExTdnZKckZsLTlkekpTNmpYMm84cVQ0LXExbjZJQ203cS41NkI0NEY2RDEwNTU3Q0M2 Tevi Troy References Kenneth L.
