Barry Rubin I was saddened this morning to learn that Barry Rubin, a brilliant and prolific scholar of Israel and Middle East Studies, had passed over the weekend. Barry had been struggling with cancer for quite some time, and his continued surge in productivity over the last year, while battling serious illness, was nothing short of heroic. I had been privileged to know him through our work for Scholars for Peace in the Middle East. Barry taught the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) in Herzliya, Israel and was director of the Global Research in International Affairs (GLORIA) Center and editor of the Middle East Review of International Affairs (MERIA). His many books included Israel: An Introduction, recently published by Yale University Press, as well as The Israel-Arab Reader (seventh edition), The Long War for Freedom: The Arab Struggle for Democracy in the Middle East (Wiley), and The Truth About Syria (Palgrave-Macmillan). He was the editor of the GLORIA center website and of his blog, Rubin Reports. He was also a longtime columnist for The Jerusalem Post. Barry’s extraordinary body of work will serve as a substantial legacy to the world, and especially to those who care about Israel in the Middle East. And his memory will be a blessing to all who knew him.
