As the fall semester begins, The Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law today introduced a resource guide to help promote civil discourse and prevent hateful and anti-Semitic activity on campuses. The LDB “Fact Sheet on the Elements of Anti-Semitic Discourse” was compiled in response to requests from U.S. university administrators who are seeking guidance on distinguishing between disputes over Israel’s policies and outright hate speech. The fact sheet is being sent to dozens of top university administrators across the U.S., and will be placed in the hands of campus officials meeting with the Brandeis Center in the coming weeks. “With this summer’s events in Israel practically guaranteeing heightened debate on U.S. college campuses, this resource will help university officials ensure that students’ civil rights remain protected,” said LDB President and General Counsel Kenneth L. Marcus. “Free speech and intense debate are the hallmark of collegiate activity – crossing the line into hate speech is not.” The new fact sheet is an important addition to an existing library of resources designed to provide counsel for university administrators and student leaders on combating anti-Semitism and anti-Israelism on U.S. campuses. These tools include: “The LDB Best Practices Guide for Combating Campus Anti-Semitism and Anti-Israelism” and “A Short Guide to the Law Against Campus Anti-Semitism.”
