Last week, the largest nongovernmental organization of Imams in the world, the Global Imams Council (GIC), made a groundbreaking decision to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA)’s definition of anti-Semitism. The GIC’s membership consists of over 1,000 Imams from all Islamic denominations and schools of thought. This important step to address the resurgence of global anti-Semitism comes just one week after the first Muslim-majority country, Albania, adopted the IHRA definition. GIC President, Imam al-Budair, stated that his organization “is determined to strengthening the bridges of peace between Islam and all religions.” We are optimistic that more organizations will follow the GIC and adopt the IHRA’sinternationally accepted definition of anti-Semitism.
