Published by The Boston Globe on 4/15/2025 As Harvard University prepares for a titanic showdown with the Trump administration over its academic independence, the president on Tuesday threatened the school’s tax exempt status while the first effects of a $2 billion freeze in federal funding began to be felt on campus. Others also argued that the basis of the administration’s complaint, that changes are necessary because Harvard has tolerated antisemitism on campus, are so serious the university is in no position to fight. Kenneth Marcus, a former official in the first Trump administration who now runs the Louis D. Brandeis Center, a Jewish advocacy group, compared Harvard’s intransigence to the refusal of some schools in the civil rights era to racially integrate. “It really is not a good look for Harvard,” he said. “I understand that Harvard, like many universities, has political objections to the Trump administration, but this is not the time to act on ideological differences.” Marcus and his group previously sued Harvard over its handling of alleged antisemitism and campus protests.
