A Jewish legal group sued California on Thursday, accusing the state of failing to check widespread antisemitism in its schools.

What happened: The lawsuit, believed to be the first of its kind targeting a state and filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, was brought by the Brandeis Center, a nonprofit organization focused, in part, on protecting the rights of Jewish students in the U.S. In it, the group claims the state is in violation of its constitution by failing to enforce discrimination laws and to provide a “free and equal education” to Jewish students in public schools.

The court filing seeks to outlaw certain curriculum, have an independent monitor oversee school districts that violate state policies and improve how the state tracks complaints. The need for the lawsuit has been heightened since the Oct. 7, 2023, attack by Hamas on Israel and Israel’s subsequent war in Gaza, which led to a spike in antisemitism in schools, the group claimed in court filings.
