LDB’s Vice President, L. Rachel Lerman, Esq. The Louis D. Brandeis Center’s Vice President, L. Rachel Lerman, Esq., published an op-ed yesterday in Newsweek, explaining the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act. The bill, introduced in Congress on May 23rd, seeks to direct the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights to adopt the State Department’s definition of anti-Semitism. The Brandeis Center has previously applauded this legislation as an important step that will allow the Department of Education to better recognize and address anti-Semitism. In her op-ed, L. Rachel Lerman emphasizes that the new Anti-Semitism Awareness Act does not violate the First Amendment by interfering with free speech, but rather provides an important protection for Jewish students from anti-Semitic assault and harassment.
