Louis D. Brandeis Center Builds Leadership Team With Chief Development Officer

CFRE Shirley Hamilton Hartman will lead the team’s fundraising strategies

Washington, D.C. (September 15, 2025) – Today, The Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law announced that Shirley Hamilton Hartman will join the organization as Chief Development Officer.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Shirley to the Brandeis Center team at this increasingly pivotal juncture in our country’s history,” said Hon. Kenneth L. Marcus, chairman and CEO of the Brandeis Center and the former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education who ran the Office of Civil Rights during two administrations. “As anti-Semitism rises, so, too, must we rise to eradicate it when it rears its ugly head. We are confident that Shirley’s extensive expertise in the fundraising space will help us become more equipped than ever to address the growing threat of racism on college campuses, in workplaces, and across the country.”

Hamilton Hartman is a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) and a nationally respected advancement executive and fundraising strategist with nearly three decades of experience leading transformational development programs across higher education, national nonprofits, political campaigns, and humanitarian organizations. As Chief Development Officer, she will lead the expansion of fundraising strategies and optimize fundraising operations and infrastructure.

“As someone of Jewish ancestry, my commitment to defending and advancing human dignity is not abstract—it is grounded in lived experience,” said Hamilton Hartman. “What excites me most is that the Center doesn’t merely respond to incidents—it shapes legal precedent, influences public discourse, and empowers future generations through education and advocacy. It is an honor to lead the fundraising program for the Brandeis Center, and I look forward to securing the resources necessary to advance this critical and impactful mission.”

Prior to her role at the Brandeis Center, Hamilton Hartman served as Chief Development Officer at George Mason University, where she led strategic philanthropic efforts in support of a $1 billion comprehensive campaign. She also served as Vice President of Development for Spirit of America and has held leadership roles with the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), Women in Development, and various community boards. Her work has been recognized with the National Audubon Society’s New Star Award and The Salvation Army’s Achievement Award. The Brandeis Center works to advance the civil and human rights of the Jewish people and promote justice for individuals in all sectors, including the workplace, housing, healthcare, public accommodations, government services, unions, academia, and corporations. While the Brandeis Center is most known for its work combating K-12 and campus anti-Semitism – such as the precedent-setting agreement with Harvard University – the organization has also filed lawsuits and helped Jews challenge discriminatory practices of Ben & Jerry’s, Microsoft, the New York Legal Aid Group’s union, and the Association of Legal Aid Attorneys.
